Kashan is an important city in central Iran, with a magnificent history of carpet weaving dating from the 16th century. Classic pieces show a diamond-shaped medallion with small matching spandrels on a floral field, however all-over Shah Abbas flowers, pictorial and hunting scenes are also found. They are mostly in wool and very occasionally in silk. Traditional base colours are reds and blues, but more recently Kashans have been woven for the international market in paler beiges.
Rugs woven in this region are renowned for their high quality and recognized all over the world. Often, a professional weaver in one of these cities will work nonstop on a rug for many years. Only the famous asymmetrical Persian knot is used in the weaving of these fine rugs.
The materials can be all wool, all silk or a precise ratio of the two. The foundation of the rugs is cotton except in very fine pieces where it is pure silk. Countless handmade Persian rugs made in such cities as Kashan, Yazd or Kerman have been known to last several hundred years. It is not an exaggeration to say that these are some of the finest rugs in the world.
